What is the Funding Rate?
The Funding Rate is a periodic fee exchanged between long and short positions in perpetual futures contracts, designed to anchor the contract price to the spot price. Binance perpetual futures settle every 8 hours.
- Positive Rate (e.g. +0.01%) - Longs pay shorts, indicating bullish sentiment; going long costs a fee
- Negative Rate (e.g. -0.01%) - Shorts pay longs, indicating bearish sentiment; going short costs a fee
- Normal Range - Typically fluctuates between -0.01% and +0.03%
- Extreme Rates - Exceeding ±0.1% indicates the market is extremely one-sided
Funding Rate Arbitrage Strategies
When funding rates remain consistently high, the following strategies can be used for arbitrage:
- Positive Rate Arbitrage - Buy spot + short perpetual futures to earn funding fees paid by longs
- Negative Rate Arbitrage - Sell spot (or borrow and sell) + long perpetual futures to earn funding fees paid by shorts
- Note - Trading fees, slippage, and price volatility risks must be considered. Funding rates also accumulate rapidly under high leverage
